Weird Screws. on picture hanger

Screws can hardly be called screws. The rod diameter is about 1mm and the length is less than 3/8 inch. I don't understand how they can hold a pen! The hanger is really thin black metal and they come in packaging that looks all oily and ugly. You get a lot of them for the price, but what good are they if you can't even use them?
