I have been using one of these vertical table fans (Lasko) for a few years. At first it was loud enough to be a distraction at work, but as it got older it also got so loud that it couldn't be used in the office if you wanted to work. This fan is much quieter, offers more speed options, and delivers much more efficient airflow. The lowest setting provides enough air to cool my bookshelf two meters away, but it's barely audible. The old fan had to run at high speed to deliver the same airflow - probably due to the "squirrel cage" design. If things go like this for a few more years, I'll be very happy.
