Works right on the fridge - with mod

I bought this particular knife holder based on the pretty good reviews and needed a knife holder that mounts directly to the fridge wall. I followed the printed instructions to remove the plastic backing and I'm glad I did because the metal backing snaps into place really really firmly and yes I can see how quite a bit of a finger pinch it is. Luckily that didn't happen to me; however, the holder did not stop at the fridge! I stumbled across it and re-read the instructions to see if I'd missed anything about attaching the metal back one way or another, but no, nothing about it. I decided to experiment before sending the holder back. First I carefully separated the metal backing with a box cutter, and when I had enough space between the backing and the magnets, I inserted a butter knife in between (while the box cutter blade was still separating the two pieces) and used a butter knife as leverage to to separate the pad from the magnet and I just dropped the pad on the kitchen counter. I then flipped the pad over and carefully moved the pad onto the magnets to place the holder on the fridge. However, it was not possible to turn the metal substrate upside down. In frustration, I then checked to see if the holder would stick to the fridge with its "front" and dammit, it was sticking! I wasn't very happy with the outward facing "back" including the 2 mounting holes in the wall bracket but said "ok never mind the holes will still be covered with knives." Unfortunately the knives don't stick the pad. Some of the smaller knives held, but they weren't secure and I could see the knives falling out of their holders at the most unfortunate moments. Who cares, let's try a holder without a base. Repeated the whole operation using a box cutter and a butter knife (it was like an operation because I had to be very precise and careful when separating the two parts!) to separate the substrate from the magnet again and without much hope I brought the Bracket to the side of the fridge, open backwards towards the fridge. And the keeper almost puked out of my hands; it stuck to the wall of my fridge with such force! Wow! The final test was to place the knives on the holder. I have a red set of Fiesta knives with handles that are not the lightest, and all of the knives are very tight in the holder. If I REALLY wanted to, I could mount a few more knives (much cheaper ones with lightweight black plastic handles on top), but that would make the holder pretty tight, so I don't think I'd go that route. . I generally need a longer bracket, but it fits the side of my fridge and the cabinets don't get in the way (can't pull the fridge out anymore because of the laundry room door on the right). on the other side of the fridge, and if you pull the fridge out further, the laundry doors won't open). I suppose a longer holder would fit if I placed it under the bottom edge of the kitchen cabinets so that's something to keep in mind but I like this holder where it is. I'm glad I experimented with the pad before sending it all back! After this experience I re-read some of the reviews and several reviews say the same thing about removing the backing completely so give it a try before you give up! I am very happy with the holder and would recommend it. However, the instructions (or lack thereof) could have been more specific to include an advertisement for installing a strapless holder on the fridge in case the strap wasn't liable. I'm taking off one star for the instructions, but once installed the product works perfectly.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
