I've had other mechanical timers like this of various brands and sizes, and this time I almost went with a digital model because of the subtle but very annoying hum that comes with these things . As a result, I settled on this one because of the reasonable price and was pleasantly surprised that the thing is either completely silent or I've lost my hearing (I'm really hoping for the first one, not the second!). The only sound it makes is a faintly audible *click* when turning on and off. The only thing that bothers me is that I would rather have the socket on the side than on the front. Because of this design, this thing sticks out MANY inches off the wall and I had to move my fish tank (not an easy task) to place this thing behind it. However, one of these micro extenders for DC adapters will solve this problem.
