Review on πŸ’Ύ Geekworm X820 V3.0 USB 3.0 Mobile Hard Disk Module - Storage Expansion Board for Raspberry Pi 3 B+/3B with 2.5 Inch SATA HDD/SSD Support by Aaron Zaragosa

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A good board, but after 2 weeks of use, fan squeaking started.

Great card for USB 3.0 connectivity and additional space for a 2.5" SSD. I found 2 problems with this board with the X820 case. First, when you install and mount the SSD on the board, the metal case of the SSD will come in contact with the solder points for the case fan power connector. I had to wrap tape around the SSD and insert a spacer to keep the SSD from contacting the solder joints. The problem is solved, but the manufacturer should solve this problem. The second issue I found when using this board with the X820 case was an interesting one. My problem was that the SSD was not recognized initially. I took the board out of the case, the SSD was recognized and booted normally. Put the board back in the case and reassemble, the Pi won't boot or the SSD won't be recognized. Case cover removed, then rebooted, voila, the SSD was recognized and booted. It made no sense at the moment and was a headache. Then I realized that the problem was the USB bridge. When plugging in the USB bridge with the housing cover closed, it must not rest completely on the pins. It appears that when the jumper is installed with the cover removed, it is inserted 1/16 inch further into the USB port. I repeated this several times with and without the lid. Either the case posts appear to be offset 1/16" from the back of the case, or the USB bridge is 1/16" shorter. I fixed it by simply using the USB cable as a bridge. The problem is solved. Update: Case fan started making noise after 2 weeks, no big deal, just turned it off. In any case, I'm not sure if this is necessary as the case has adequate ventilation. Manufacturing Suggestion: Either design a fanless case (no need) or make a better quality fan.
