I measured a pot of boiling water and a glass of water with crushed ice and both readings were accurate. The only advice I can give is to make sure whatever you are measuring is set to the correct emissivity. If this is not the case, you will get a very inaccurate measurement. The default emissivity is set at 0.95, which is generally suitable for most normal surfaces such as wood and plaster. But you have to change it for metals and other reflective surfaces.
