Review on Block Bros 12Oz Oil by Grace Brown

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The perfect NATURAL barrier oil!

Loved this block oil! I bought some really expensive cutting boards for my kitchen and wanted to polish them up before using them to make sure they would last me for years to come. I'm VERY tired of artificial, highly toxic, preservative-heavy foods and try to stay as "natural", "organic" and "clean" as possible when it comes to health or food products. I didn't want to use an oil that might go rancid over time, and I didn't want to use mineral oil, so after careful research I found that Block Bros. Block Oil has pretty decent natural ingredients and a solid reputation. I have covered all my boards with several coats of oil for 3 days BEFORE USING THEM and have been very pleased with how easy this oil was to use and how quickly it set and hardened the wood. It leaves a beautiful shine that slightly darkens the surface of the wood but doesn't leave it sticky, oily or dirty; it will dry completely. The only thing I found with this product is that if you constantly use and wash the items to be lubricated, you will have to reapply it more often than recommended. Instead of applying block oil about once a month I apply it every other week and so far my boards are looking great with no signs of deep cuts, water damage or stress cracks. When you wash the boards you will find that the shine is gone and like me you may feel the need to reapply the oil as needed. Don't worry if the shine or oil barrier seems to fade after every wash. I think this is normal as it takes some time (months to years) to "season" a cutting board with block butter. A previous review noted that the oil smells slightly like lemon and attracts ants, but personally I don't think it smells like lemon - it has a very neutral smell - and I haven't experienced any ant or bug infestations from the oil. If you don't like the service or the constant reapplying, DO NOT purchase this product. If you don't mind constantly reapplying and conditioning to be more natural then this will work for you. Remember: You don't have to reapply as often as I do. Once a month is recommended but every board and person is different so my advice is to buy this oil and then figure out what works best for you.
