Although this unit is designed for commercial use, it works well in residential areas. You need some electrical knowledge to install it. It plugs into power and charges the battery when the device is on and then lights up when the device is off. To use it we didn't have a designated space for it, so I plugged in the power cord. It can be connected to both 110V and 220V, so you need to understand how it works to set it up safely. The light stays on for hours when the power goes out. This device has a green charging indicator on the bottom, which is very bright at night.
