A bit disappointed in the best construction toys

I really wanted to like this toy, really. I bought this when the kids were 2.5 and we also got a set for our birthdays. This toy has rarely seen the light of day. My boys love playing with Magna tiles and they are inseparable from Lego. All they do is build, build, build and they love anything that moves. So it looks like it's right up her alley, right? No! When it came out I sat with them and we built it together following the instructions but it was too difficult to get the wheels turning and turning with the yellow tool. It just wasn't that easy. The yellow tool should have had some distance between itself and the bottom wheel, but nothing could shorten that distance. Such a disappointment! It's just not intuitive. We've tried building different things but these gears don't move across the floor. My kids are now 4.5 years old and haven't played much with the gearbox, they got used to it quickly. They don't get bored with their Legos and Magna tiles, but they have them. The whole concept of building it so that the movement of one wheel drives the rest is cool, but the execution is a bit lacking. Obviously this toy has great reviews and I even gave it to some friends of my kids thinking they would love it but now I'm sticking with other toys.

Pros
  • Excellent construction
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
