Much better than OEM, easy install, clean air

I have used OEM cabin air filters, Wix and Fram air filters in our 2007 Honda Element. I keep an eye on this filter because it catches a lot of bugs, dust, and road debris. Because the filter is in your dash, these items sit and collect, getting wet when it's raining and humid, and contributing to a lingering musty smell in the air conditioner (tropical rainy conditions in Hawaii for me). I recently saw this item on "WallyWorld" and decided to buy it here for price reasons. While regular filters are bright white, like an aquarium filter, this one appears to contain activated carbon, giving it a black appearance on the white filter media. At first I thought it didn't let air through as well as a regular filter since it doesn't show through, but those reservations are gone. The first thing I noticed is that passing a farm behind an old broken down car really helps. smoke or when someone is mowing the grass. Outside odors that used to get into the car immediately bother me a little longer and aren't as strong. I normally "recirculate" my car for this reason, but I wanted to make sure I was getting my money's worth with these more expensive filters. If you only drive with "recirculated air" I don't know how much that will help you, probably your climate and the amount of stuff that gets into your air filter and decomposes is the biggest factor. If you are using outside air this filter is an OEM upgrade as both trap objects to keep your air conditioner clean but this filter actually reduces odours. I check my cabin air filter with every oil change, that's about 4500 miles and the recommendation is probably around 10,000 miles, but it's easily accessible in my Honda Element so I can check it anytime in just a few minutes. I change the filter every 10-15 thousand kilometers, it really depends on the driving conditions. The more I drive on back roads, the faster this thing fills up with bugs, leaves, and debris. In general, I recommend keeping an eye on the cabin filter and changing it if it is dirty. This filter helps when you are bothered by foreign smells. If that's not a problem, get cheaper versions from Fram, Wix, or OEM.
