I am female, 1.70 m tall, 65 kg. As a commuter, I drive about 10 km a day. The standard saddle caused me significant discomfort, so after reading the positive reviews I gave it a try. I have found it to be very durable after a few months of use - there is no significant wear and tear to the fabric. It relieves pressure in the middle and has enough cushioning to allow for a little left-to-right movement, but it's far from soft. I think that extra padding or cycling shorts will still be a good option for many.
