No Memory Foam, Neck Pain For Back Sleepers

TLDR: This pillow has two main problems: (1) It's not memory foam (2) For those of us who sleep on our backs, it puts pressure on the Top the neck towards the sky and create a 3 inch gap under the bottom of the neck with no support. My neck hurt after the second night. Is it memory foam? In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Tempurpedic made "memory foam" famous by successfully selling pillows and cushions made from a new "space-age" material that automatically molds to the shape of the human body. I know because I was there: a Brookstone employee at the mall suggested this to me, I read the marketing on the box and bought a back pillow. Tempurpedic's success prompted competitors to launch similar memory foam products. Tempurpedic Memory Foam was inspired by materials developed by astronauts for space shuttles (viscoelastic polyurethane foam). Under the heat and the gentle pressure of the human body on the pillow or cushion, the material melts easily to conform to the shape of the body. The Ecosafeter "Memory Foam" pillow doesn't do that at all. It's made from a durable piece of foam that snaps into shape when needed. You'll see it in dramatic action when you open the packaging: it comes rolled up, and when you unfold it it explodes and takes the shape of a pillow. The warmth and gentle pressure of the human body lying on it does not affect this form in any way. Which brings me to the second issue regarding people who sleep on their backs. This pillow is quite thick. Because it doesn't melt at all to conform to the body, the large contour lifts the neck high off the bed. This puts the neck in a few sharp angles and creates a 3 inch triangular gap under the bottom of the neck where the spine is not supported at all. A night after that was pretty comfortable. By the end of the second night my lower neck was in severe pain and it would probably take me a day or two to recover from sleeping on that pillow. The rest of the spine is generally what ergonomic memory foam pillows are designed to *prevent*, not cause. Most people over the age of 42 who have developed presbyopia spend too much time during the day tilting their heads and necks forward: leaning forward to get a better view of something at the kitchen counter, desk or desk. At night when you sleep, you don't want to make things worse. This pillow *might* be suitable for side sleepers. I don't sleep on my side so I really don't know but I do sleep on my side sometimes and I've tried this pillow. My shoulder had to be quite forward to fit and side sleeping would have been better if the pillow was even thicker. I read 2-3 pages of reviews about this pillow which didn't put me off. Here I tried to write a review that I would like to see before I click the 'Add to Cart' button. I will try to bring Revane back.
