The built-in microphone lets you record your voice. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't connect a microphone, but I'll get over it. (That's why I made a 4 star rating and not 5). This product allows you to receive and record Bluetooth. It will appear on your devices and you can play music from there to project through the speaker. This also allows recording to tape; Music recorded from your phone or computer via Bluetooth (that's not a word, but less confusing) can be written to tape. from the built-in microphone or if it is an internal recording. I don't know how those old school machines did it. The last device I had was a Christmas present for my 10th birthday over 20 years ago. Radio reception is excellent, and it's very satisfying to tune in, turning the knob a millimeter at a time to connect to the invisible radio waves floating around our heads. I had a highlight moment from Jodie Foster on Contact that made me feel connected to outer space. I'm frustrated that I can't connect an external microphone through the phone jack, but I don't regret this purchase. In addition, 9 batteries of size "D" are required. It's a big bummer, I can't connect an external microphone.
