Review on πŸ”“ Eclipse Quick Release Woodworking Vise: Unlock Your Woodworking Potential by John Destruction

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good quality vise with some minor imperfections

I am a professional carpenter and bought this for my second workbench. I already have two 35 year old Wilton quick releases that still work great. To my knowledge this is a reproduction of an old Record #52 vise. It came intact from Revain, the outer box could have used more padding but it's ok. The ride is smooth and generally well done. The quick release mechanism works easily and the guide rods move without much friction or binding. Everything is designed for tough use and should last a lifetime. I gave it one star for the following shortcomings (from the carpenter's perspective): 1) The lead screw has vibrations left behind during machining (see close-up photo). This is likely due to vibration during milling and also using a blunt cutting edge. Really stupid mistake by the mechanic. 2) The lead screw is not Acme thread quality (see photo of a small section of Acme thread) like my old Wilton vise which wears out very slowly. However, I think this brace will also last a long time as the pitting does not affect the smoothness of the brace. Lay the board non-flush on the countertop and over the vise. So I had to trim it flush and remove about 1/4 inch. 4) The bezels are designed to protrude about 2.0 inches above the table top, so you will need to place a thick shim block between the underside of the table and the base. upper part of the casting support. My padding was about 1.75 thick for the thickness of my upper. I think this was designed by a locksmith, not a woodworker where the part held is never flush with the countertop. I looked at a lot of vises and most were flimsy or just plain cheap. I even gave up on Wilton who really downgraded their vise when I bought them decades ago. Worst of all were the wood shops, which sold cheap craft supplies that would be very disappointing in a year or two. You should be ashamed. Overall this is one of the best 10 inch vises in this price range and works well for heavy duty carpentry applications. I have included a few photos as it is difficult to really make out the vise in the photo for sale.
