I bought this after completing a small electrical project in our attic. To be on the safe side, I turned off the electricity in more than half of our house before cutting the wire. I probably spent 30-45 minutes pacing back and forth from the control box to the attic doubting myself before making the cut. And luckily I did, because the switch for that cable wasn't "attic" but another one that just went through the attic. That Monday a colleague told me about non-contact voltage testers and although my project was complete I ordered one for the next one which is sure to come. This device works great. Insert a battery, turn it on and attach it to any wire and it will light up and beep to let you know it's hot. It is so easy. No secondary device, just this one the size of a marker and just touch it to the wire. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and order safely and securely with electricity.
