I'm not entirely sure if the mouthpiece is silicone and not plastic, but who knows. I didn't read the product description carefully enough to realize that the straws are plastic so I will continue to use other silicone straws that I have. My reason for the 3 is that the small hole that allows air to enter for smoother drinking is much larger than the original. So if you hold it upside down, it comes out in a steady stream - just enough that it comes out when you flip it over. Until (one day) it no longer leaks with the lid closed, but the inside of the lid is damp. Let's just say I'm not throwing away the original just yet (although he did bit the mouthpiece in half).
