Review on StarTech.com Active Mini DisplayPort to VGA Converter for Mac/PC - 1080p Video - VESA Certified - mDP 1.2 to VGA Dongle by Will Bremer

My new Lenovo Thinkpad Twist doesn't have the analog VGA port that I need to connect to older projectors. But it has a display port. Lenovo wants twice as much as this StarTech, so I decided to take a chance. Came in a plastic bag with no instructions or anything else. Transmitter only plus end caps. It's a lot smaller/lighter/thinner than I expected for some reason. It didn't work at first, but I saw from another reviewer that it needs to be plugged in when the laptop is on. Tried this and then it worked fine on Linux! I tried several resolutions and all worked.
