You should feel when the peaks are exactly in the middle and then freeze the measurement by turning the knob so you can take the reading with a caliper or microphone. I'm still learning - every time I get a different reading; only deviates by a few tenths, but is not constant enough for critical measurements. Expect some practice with them if you need very accurate measurements.
