While this is a versatile nailer, there are some trade-offs. The reason for different nailers for specific tasks has to do with the drive that drives the nail/staple into the workpiece. An assembly nailer or tacker has more drive than a finish nailer, for example. Since this nailer works with 16 and 18 gauge and staplers, the driver must be able to drive the larger of the three staples. All that is to say is that the drive head is approximately 1/8" wide and leaves a 1/8" square hole whether you're driving a small end nail or a larger nail/staple. If you just use staples that's fine as the staple will cover a larger hole. If you're using 5/8" 18 gauge bar, you'll have to fill a huge hole for such a small nail that may or may not fit when you're done. Anyway, the pistol worked fine while controlling all three, and being able to do this without having multiple pistols nearby is very handy. The only 2 downsides I would list are the larger hole it creates and the lack of a tool - less nail cleaning added to the SLX31. I'll probably still need to buy a nailer for a job where I need to keep hole size to a minimum.
