I haven't cleaned my brushes for, let's say, a long time. My foundation brush is newer but it still got pretty messy since the bristles are so compact. It took me a few sessions to really get it working, my powder and blush/highlighter brushes are very clean. I suggest you do the following: Fill an empty water bottle with warm water and soap/brush cleaner, this will fill the cleaning bowl. Have an extra container for used water. Packing, but without completely drying the brushes. Check your bristles to see if you need to continue brushing. I usually only had to do this on large face brushes. When the water gets very dirty, I pour it into a second bowl and refill the water bottle. Dry completely after cleaning. Smaller brushes tend to dry out VERY FAST, so be careful not to dry them out. I suggest drying them slowly, changing the bristle shape as you go. It turns very easily and gets thick bristles.
