Not a cure for every dog โ€‹โ€‹but may help

The newest addition to our extended family is a very young yellow labrador mix named Louie. What he lacks in self-control and manners he makes up for in happiness and joy. He's a bright and happy guy who was apparently fired because of severe separation anxiety. My parents adopted him from the local animal welfare agency, unaware that he had the ability to gnaw his way out of a metal-framed box and tear a seven-foot patchwork quilt to pieces in under 45 minutes. Needless to say we are working on his boxing training, obedience and also sedative administration, but until then we wanted to try things like pheromone collars and compression wrap vests. Simply because it can be delivered to my home the next day. The band fit well. Louie is the perfect weight for his height (40lbs) and based on the size chart I ordered him a medium size. The headband fitted well, but felt too short for his torso (we have the signature Thunder shirt for the older dog, which is too big for Louie, but our older dog has it to the tail). As soon as Louie walked into our house, I put a compression bandage on him, hoping it would lessen his anxiety about being away from my parents during the day (he even worries when he's not home, but that's it already). ). People). Louis' reaction to this compression vest was complete indifference. The second my dad walked out my front door he started harassing our youngest Aussie and begging to be let out in the back yard (he can see my parents house, his house, from my back yard). I let him outside and he immediately tried to pull himself out of his coat and licked every part of his body that was covered. When we all got back inside, he discovered that he could undo the velcro by rubbing his back against the orthopedic bed, so he spent a good thirty minutes trying to figure out if the velcro could be undone hands-free. pretty well done and we have the original Thunder shirt to compare to the one we've been using for years. After reading the instructions, this coat was easy to put on and adjust, and while I didn't wash it, I assume it washes the same way a Thunder shirt would. Louie just isn't suited for this kind of therapy. However, we have had good luck with other dogs using compression shirts. We had an older dog who was scared of cars and didn't particularly like vet visits, but once he put on a compression shirt he really felt better. We're starting to use it with our 6 year old Australian for her fear of thunderstorms and fireworks and while it's not a miracle cure, along with a noisy fan, it helps ease her anxiety.
