I have a 75 gallon cichlid tank that has far too many adult fish (about 30) - they have been breeding. The Fluval 406 is loaded with expensive media and I also have a large UV sterilizer. There were no problems with cleaning every 3-4 days. I replaced the smaller sponge filter with this one; connected it to a powerful air pump I had; and it will take 8-10 days now. Of course, the suction power depends on the air pump, but it is very strong. The sponges are fairly easy to remove and clean (the extra sponges included are a plus). The only complaint I would have is the noise: large air bubbles making a gurgling noise. I think the outlet screen can create micro-bubbles and reduce the noise. Either way, it's not enough to degrade performance, and I'm glad I don't have to buy a bigger Fluval for $300 or more.
