Oil burns so quickly on first start - oil literally turns to smoke, smell becomes very intense and oil burns very quickly. The surface has to be porous and I had to apply some carrier oil and let it burn. I use high quality oils and I don't want to waste them. This one gets hot - it's easy to burn yourself if you accidentally touch any part of it. I haven't had this problem with my other oil burner which heats up around the edges and also has a slower odor release and maintains the life of the oils so extra care is needed.
