Great value for a first radio!

The only radios I've had in the past have been CB and FRS radios. So this amateur radio is a step forward for me. I am currently preparing for the Technician License Exam which does not appear to be very difficult to learn so I am not currently broadcasting on this radio. So far I've only used it as a scanner and it's great. Once I have a license I will play with repeaters and so on. I've always wanted to be an "amateur" and I think now is the right time. It is convenient for camping, traveling and emergency/survival use. I programmed it using free CHIRP software with my local NOAA weather frequencies, national calling channels, my local repeaters, GMRS channels, and my local fire and ambulance frequencies. I've tried getting the police feeds to be scanned, but I suspect they're either hidden or encrypted, which I can understand. This bundle offers excellent value for money as it includes a radio, remote microphone, programming cable, earpiece, belt loop and wrist strap. . That's about all you need to get started in the amateur radio hobby. At 5 watts you should have enough range to reach a nearby repeater to extend the range of your radio. I found that you can also upgrade the antenna for the radio itself (it's an ExpertPower XP-669, supposedly a good one) and install a mobile antenna for your car (I'm eyeing this Nagoya UT-72). I found a lot of help on the internet to pick up the ham radio terminology and knowledge pretty quickly. There is a YouTube channel called Ham Radio Crash Course that is good for beginners. There are many free and paid online ham radio courses and practice tests available. So if you're interested in radio communications, get your technician license and buy this kit - a great way to get started!

Pros
  • High power: original waterproof portable programmable ham radio, high/medium/low power settings.
Cons
  • So far so good
