Review on HP 25 Inch Wide Screen Monitor - 2509M (Model: NT195AA#ABA) by Kenneth Alvarez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Mac Users: If you know how to set it up properly, this is a great monitor.

I was surprised others didn't mention the same issue as me, but then I noticed that other Mac users are using laptops with this monitor, so they probably had to use the DVI input. I have a 2010 Mac Mini so it has an HDMI port. First I used an HDMI to HDMI cable and the picture was a bit larger than the screen and the text was a bit blurry. You can reduce the image size in the display settings, but then the text will be even blurrier. Using the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with your Mac Mini almost solved this problem. Next you need to go to Applications/Utilities/ and then open Terminal. Copy this line and press return:defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 Then reboot (or log out) and the text will become clearer on startup. This is advice that has been circulated many times on the internet. Apparently Apple has changed the font rendering options available in the Appearance settings in Snow Leopard, so this is a way to circumvent this and enable the old subpixel rendering method (Apple font smoothing). You can undo the change (if you don't like the results) by checking the box (which now has a dash) under Appearance that says "Use LCD font smoothing when available". But most people seem to agree that this doesn't work as well as the old method. I agree with the advice others have given about color calibration. The glossy screen doesn't bother me at all. Apparently, it has advantages in terms of looks, otherwise only matte screens would be produced. However, this is a matter of personal preference. So if you are not sure, see it in person before you buy it. I echo others' praise - great sharpness, colors and overall image at a good price (compared to the $550 I paid for a 19" monitor 6 years ago, of course).
