Sturdy, a little stiff

I got tired of constantly piling up books for Zoom conferences and saw this when a friend posted her remote learning device for her kids. This seems significant. The hinges on the "Z" are pretty tight: I had to check the diagram on the box (to make sure I didn't push something to the point of breaking) when I first opened the stand. No, the way it's done. It's fairly hefty, so it's not the kind of stand you can throw in a backpack for coffee shop work (not that anyone walks much during a pandemic). I like that the top of the stand slides out, adding a few inches of additional potential height. In practice, however, I found that I didn't need the extra height for tabletop use (I'm short!). I set it up on a (carpet) floor, adjusting it up and down until I found a sweet spot. I plan to mount it to the back of my desk when not in use as it is stiff and heavy. (Originally, I planned to (a) carry it up and down the house so I can sit or stand in different places, (b) put it away between meetings.) But now I'm thinking about getting a wireless keyboard and using the stand as a permanent mount for my laptop to have a more ergonomic fit that minimizes neck strain. Overall: I like this as an elegant solution to a small setup problem. Of course there will be enough books and boxes - you don't have to resort to this apparatus. But it streamlines a repetitive part of my work routine and is easy on the eye - a nice little respite in busy times.
