I've bought quite a few of these in various wattages, from 25w to 150w, for the dozen or so tanks my wife and I have. None of these heaters are more than two years old. I was very happy with them for a long time. I like the LED temperature display and the way it shows the current temperature and the set point. They are much easier to set up than any glass thermometer and are always within a degree of their setting. I praised her for a long time and thought of nothing else. Then they started to fail. One by one they betrayed me. The worst thing is that they fail: they fail. They don't just stop heating one day. Raising the temperature dramatically, they use all their might to saturate the water with steam as much as possible. Luckily, since we have thermometers in each tank, we noticed the rise in temperature before we lost the fish. Today was a fluke because the 150 watts in our 32 gallon tank failed and heated it to almost 100 degrees before I spotted it. Luckily there is only the flag cichlid here, which tolerates the heat very well. A month ago this tank was full of corridors and they could never have survived such a heat. One of the Nerites managed to escape the aquarium and found shelter above the water level, so it looks like it survived the heat. I'm honestly amazed because the water was uncomfortably hot to put MY hand in. This particular heater was just over a year old. I've lost count of how many of those cobalt colored Neotherms have failed. I think it's the FOURTH and they all failed hot. This corresponds to about 50% failure over a period of 2 years. Some of those who failed were less than a year old. We put them on surge protectors, so I'm skeptical that surges could damage the electronics. In any case, the internal thermometers in the cobalt neotherms keep running and flashing red to let me know the water is MUCH hotter than set point, as if I can do anything about it. them with glass eheims which don't control the temperature that well and are much more difficult to set up but then again my glass heaters haven't gone crazy yet and tried to cook my fish. For larger tanks I am considering a separate temperature control module. Neotherms are a great idea and I love everything about them. Except for the fish part.
