Review on Protectli Vault FW6A Firewall Micro Appliance/Mini PC - 6 Port, Intel Dual Core, AES-NI Barebone by Michael Hicks

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Rock solid for my opinion

I got this to replace a dated (no AES encryption support) and power hogging desktop that I used as my pfSense firewall.I bought this appliance along with a 32GB mSATA drive and 8GB of RAM.I backed up the config on my old firewall, installed pfSense on this hardware and restored the config. The process went pretty much without issue. The only intervention required was mapping the Networks to the new physical adapters and (optional) configuring RAMdisks for logs to save wear on the SSD. I also enabled TRIM on the OS.I've been running this for nearly 3 months and it's been problem free. I run a lightly used VPN and Snort on the box and it handles everything without breaking a sweat. I also appreciate that it takes a standard Cisco-style console cable, which I leave attached to a nearby Raspberry Pi for remote console access. Very happy.

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • It doesn't have a built-in Wi-Fi antenna, which makes it inconvenient for some users
