My German shepherd / lab mix caught on very quickly. We baited the pad with a dot of peanut butter, then when she licked it and rang the bell, stuffed her outside. Within a week she was using the bell by herself consistently. In 3 months, ringing the bell for attention, which she will still do sometimes but we always make her go out the door if she rings the bell. My only complaint is I can't get it to change tones from ding dong to anything else and have it stay, (so 4 stars). Its a minor problem and I had an identical problem with a different brand. Which was probably the same parts but still.This is still a good tool, and guests are always charmed with her little trick of ringing the bell.
