I've had this exact carbon monoxide alarm for about 10 years which is about the lifespan and as it died I just bought this replacement. So my comments relate to the previous one, but I think it's the same. Three years ago, on a freezing evening, the alarm clock rang. Maximum level recorded (>400). I didn't feel or notice anything, but we left the house immediately and called the gas company. She and the firefighters came out and inspected the house. They found that the heating stove had failed and was emitting a lot of CO. The stove was very old but heated well, I knew we would have to replace it sooner rather than later but I figured as soon as it broke we would know because it would be cold. Instead, the fault was an incomplete burn. The very cold weather, which forced him to work hard, was probably the reason why he stumbled. If we didn't have this alarm clock in the house I would never know anything was wrong and I probably wouldn't wake up the next morning. . I've since installed two more carbon monoxide alarms around the house, in different regions, and also in case one fails. It's horrible to imagine what would have happened if this house hadn't existed.
