Bought for our cat, he likes to use them at night. Has no strange smell, the sides are fluffy. The bottom is not covered with thick foam but is the same thickness as the mat. It is very soft and fluffy and can be a good cozy bed for our cat. However, the arched part is never used. I've tried teaching him and letting him know about this hidden part but he doesn't care, I'm not sure if it's because he can't tell it's there because it's like a blanket , which you have to open to get inside. Overall it's a nice cozy bed, but that dome/hood feature doesn't seem to work.
