Review on ELECOM 8-Button Finger-Operated Trackball Mouse: Wired/Wireless/Bluetooth, Smooth Tracking & Precision Sensor (M-DPT1MRXBK) by Antonio Urbina

Worst stiction ever.

Composition: n.; Static friction that must be overcome to allow relative motion of stationary contact objects. In this case we are talking about how much force it takes to literally get the ball rolling. This mouse is the best index finger trackball in a shrinking market. currently. Which is a blatant indictment of people's understanding of ergonomics and the HID market in general. For its part, Elecom has created a trackball that can do literally anything; but that makes the main attraction awkward to use. Pros: - 10 buttons, each programmable to give almost any input imaginable - Perfect size to replace the eternal god emperor of all trackballs, MS Explorer and its shogun Logitech Trackman - Amazing responsiveness and long lifespan in wireless mode - Perfect palm grip - Stay in place on the mouse pad no matter what, it takes an earthquake to move this thing. Cons: - Software and support and translation quality reflect the ever-tightening Japanese isolation - DPI switch is at the bottom of the DEFT but easily accessible from the side HUGE. I do a lot of sculpting and 3D editing, an easily accessible switch on a medium sized trackball would be ideal. Luckily, this thing is programmable so that any button or even gesture can become a DPI switch. The scroll wheel spring is too strong, annoying and cannot be scraped off or softened; The force required to click the scroll wheel is also too high. I set FN1 to middle click. The biggest problem, and indeed a deal breaker that would send me to Kensington if I wasn't a sucker for being stubborn on emotionally sunk costs: tremendous attachment to the ball. I have to touch this thing with three fingers, so that it moves smoothly. Forehead oil, wax, shaving machine oil, changing bearings to zirconium oxide, ruby and BAM (aluminum magnesium boride), only a month's running-in period - I've tried everything. My wife's Logitech for $20? It rolls like a ball on a layer of supercooled helium. Despite its shortcomings, if you can break it in, it's the best trackball on the market today. I don't want to wait and have Shuttle Xpress for extra buttons so I can switch to cheap Logitech or Kensington.

Pros
  • The best in its niche
Cons
  • The cable is shorter than others
