They work well but if you only want to use them via USB you still have to use the battery compartment. The USB end goes to the mini-USB on the battery compartment, so that's how you need to use it. I think it's like you can have a timer and all, but hiding the box is a little awkward. No instructions on how to insert a battery? I understand you have to unscrew the black panel on the back to open the whole box, insert the batteries, then there is a small set screw that goes into the black panel to hold everything together. I take it kids don't eat batteries? The remote control seems to work well, there are different modes and a dimmer.
