If your pet only uses one spot in the litter box, the pellets will "melt" at that spot and become a paste. I have found that mixing the pellets (by simply shaking the bowl) so that the uncontaminated pellets go to where your pet is urinating solves this problem. Once it turns into a paste and sticks to the shell, it is difficult to clean. However, after emptying all the used pellets from the bowl, I simply dip the bowl in hot water and the paste quickly dissolves. I always wash my toys and tray with water, so the only change to my cleaning routine is to turn on the hot water faucet. I hope this helps those struggling to get rid of this "paste". My rats seem to like it so much they love sleeping in the bowl. So I bought a frying pan with gaurd. I hope this keeps my 2 pets out of the litter box when not in use.
