I have had trouble neutralizing exceptionally hard water with other products such as the Water Softener Pad and PH Down. The water was so hard that the PH Down would have been completely useless. The water softening pad was too slow for my hard water, even after a few recharges, and my fish were showing signs of stress. I added about 100 grams of Fluval Peat to my 75 gallon filter bag and within 24 hours I noticed my fish were playing and becoming more active. GH, KH and PH decrease at a rate of around 1 unit per day, which is a safe level for most fish to get used to. I would not recommend using all 500 grams of the product at once as the product packaging recommends a tank my size. I've used about 1/5 of these with exceptional results. The soft yellow tint this product left in the water seemed to make the fish very happy and even toned down the very bright lighting I had in my new tank. (I was worried that the bright LED light would stress the fish, but now it's perfect.) I highly recommend this product for aquariums with exceptionally hard water.
