Review on Recoil SL1708 Under Seat Amplified Subwoofer by David Encarnacion

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Big bang for your buck, or is it a blast?

I installed this subwoofer in my 1994 F-150 single cab truck. Spacing was good even after adding another 3/4 inch of depth for a "custom" mount I made. This was the first time I've installed non-original speakers or decks in a car, it took around 4-5 hours including troubleshooting. I also bought a Jensen single din head unit to go with this subwoofer and the standard speakers. Plugging it together wasn't too bad with the instructions provided, even with my lack of electrical experience, but I did have trouble with the REM cable and ground from the subwoofer, but from the car side and not from the speaker. First I didn't have a good ground and then I didn't have 5V DC through the blue/white REM wire. Turns out it wasn't properly connected to the head unit. It had to be connected to the blue wire from the main unit using the antenna power cable and not where I first connected it. That's the best way I can explain it. The sound quality is actually very good. I don't care about the bass my neighbor's car wheezes at the traffic light, but this sub combined with the new head unit has definitely made my truck sound cleaner, louder and more rounded. But don't get me wrong, he can hit hard when I want to. The only thing that worries me is the heat. It's going to be VERY hot. It didn't turn off or go into protect mode, but I haven't run the stereo for more than 30 minutes at any given time. When I say hot, I mean I can't keep my hand hot on it. That's right, there's no air conditioning in my truck either. But it gives off a lot of heat. Overall excellent value for money if it can handle the heat.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • Not the best
