I bought a pair of Sony MDR-V6's over Christmas because of the price and reviews and was quite happy with them except found the sound a little dirty. Good sound, but not outstanding. I read a lot of reviews about the sound quality of the ATH-M50, but since I got along well with my cheaper Sony headphones, I didn't want to buy another pair of headphones. However, I have read review after review from audiophiles who swear by these headphones. I've decided to order a pair of these ATH-M50's and if I don't like them I will return them. I pulled the trigger and ordered the M50 in white to match my iPhone. When they arrived I noticed that they seemed massive, but when I held them in my hands I felt that they were a lot lighter than they looked. I hooked them up to my iPhone and started playing different genres of music to see how they would sound and was quite impressed. There was no muddy sound, and in different styles of music, the sound was quite comfortable to listen to. They are lightweight and feel solidly constructed. I have to admit that before buying headphones I was gravitating towards the Beats but a lot of people have complained about the quality and that's what turned me off. There are no problems with the M50s. The ear pads completely cover my ears, and after wearing the headphones for a while I have no complaints of ear pain or discomfort. Your ears will get sweaty, so I see the need to change pillows at some point. I don't think they block outside noise in the same way as Sony does, but you won't hear anyone turning up the volume with them. Believe me. Cable length is long, but not as long as the MDR-V6, so you can't traverse a room but can travel a fairly decent distance from the sound source. The .3.5mm jack is short and this caused an issue with the case I had on my iPhone. This is an issue I didn't have with the V6, but it doesn't bother me as the headphones are fully seated on the headphone jack without the case. Overall they sound amazing. I know there is a break in time but I've only listened to about 5 of the suggested 40 hour break in time and am happy with these CANS. I can't wait for the break in period to be over so I can really feel the full power of these headphones.
