Poor design, poor machine operation

With 3 hole punches there are three typical hole sizes:- 9/32: The most common black swingline in your trash drawer, small holes - 11/32: this article, medium-sized holes - 13/32: large holes. The small hole punch typically handles multiple sheets of paper, and the size of the hole is small enough to allow the paper to be attached to the rings in a typical folder. Large openings are too large for most applications. The medium hole size 13/32 is best for 3-ring binders. They are easier to move around the rings. This is a medium sized connection hole. I like the hole size. I like the number of sheets you can go through. I usually take 10 to 20 depending on the paper. Resist the temptation to walk away 40. I also like the handle - it feels good in your hand and isn't so long that it knocks the device over when you squeeze it. However, the handling of the device is very poor compared to the price of $62. The actuator is not a pretty surface and in fact you can cut yourself on it if you're not careful. Pushers do not have a smooth fit in the holes they protrude through. Therefore, when you let go of the handle, you will hear a noticeable click/clack. I've noticed this with two other types I've used over the past 20 years. This can of course be corrected by finer processing. The stops on which the paper rests are attached in the most awkward way. There is a large screw head and a recess for a large flat head screwdriver. This bolt and the nut attached to it appear to be out of place. The nut is unusually shaped and rotates as the bolt is tightened. The mother looks like she could walk through a metal floor. The screw is cheap metal, chrome plated and comes off easily. Notches are visible on the backstop. But they have no purpose because they don't stick to anything. Despite this, the nicks are large and do not allow precise placement of the holes in the edges of the paper. The factory setting for the backgauge is too short, causing the hole to be too close to the edge of the paper and tearing easily. An adjustment was needed and it was difficult. You need to use a large screwdriver on top and an adjustable wrench on the nut to loosen the screw and then adjust the backgauge. and then tighten the screw. None of this, from the human factor point of view, made any sense. The tray that holds the paper narrows so that when the paper is pushed against the back stop, it slides up at an angle. I didn't find this a useful design. The bottom rail moves up and down too easily. It is held under the device by a solid metal bracket. It can move slightly, so it needs to be glued in place. The holes in the paper are roughly punched. A finer finish would result in a sharper and more professional looking hole. Therefore, I would not buy this $62 item. Its cost is about half. Or for $62 I would have expected much finer machine work. It can move slightly, so it needs to be glued in place. The holes in the paper are roughly punched. Pros
  • Accepts 2 to 7 punch heads
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
