Review on πŸ’Ύ Hitachi 80GB 2.5 Inch IDE Laptop Hard Drive - Reliable and Spacious Storage Solution by Daniel Casper

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great replacement and backup for my BMW CIC/iDrive hard drive.

I bought this disc to use in my 2011 BMW Car Information Computer (CIC) which is the heart of the iDrive and Navigation system. The factory drive in the navigation system is a Toshiba disc with 4200 rpm and is very slow. The drive usually starts making enough mistakes to become problematic between 70,000 and 100,000 miles, and BMW takes the coin to replace it. In fact, they usually simply replace the entire computer. This Hitachi drive is faster (5400 rpm) and above all extremely cheap compared to the alternative. It's so cheap, in fact, that I bought more than one to keep as a spare. Since the operating system is QNX, you'll need a program to make a bit-for-bit, or block, copy of a hard drive, and there are a number of good programs for that. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to use a larger disk in the CIC as the system doesn't seem to recognize larger partitions without causing problems in the future (lots of research). Although people had luck with using an SSD in this application, many later came back stating that they had problems with the drive and switched back to a mechanical drive. Also, the extra cost of a PATA/IDE SSD just isn't worth the small performance improvement in CIC. I would downgrade the drive to 4 stars as it is not faster. but you have to consider the cheap price - that's why i rated it 5 stars. Of course, the cost of a gigabyte is not necessarily cheap, but you have to understand that it is difficult to find a PATA/IDE drive, and the cost of this drive is actually not too high considering the rarity of PATA/IDE IDE aware. laptop drives. All in all a great purchase.
