I purchased the smaller version of this fire starter. I needed something to keep in my camping gear. I love the wick system as it means you always have tinder to start your fire. This was the reason i purchased this particular fire starter. The instructions say it has a serrated edge to help fray the wick but mine was completely smooth. Both photos on amazon as well as the included instructions both say it has the serrated edge but it does not. I had to fray out the wick by hand (which wouldn't be hard if it weren't covered in the wax.). Once you get the wick started it is definitely wind proof. I had my two boys try their hardest to blow out the flame and they couldn't. Before being able to throw sparks, you have to get the black glossy paint removed from the ferro rod. sparks are easy to make with this but it takes some practice to aim them right at the wick. This is a very cool product, I do think it is over-priced for what it is (especially for its small size) other than those coupe of things it is a great fire starter.
