Great design: my feedback

This feels good in your hand. It has a monsterous ferro rod that makes you feel confident in 10,000 fires started. You have to spend the time fraying the rope into small strands or it won't catch. But I am only talking about 60-90 seconds of effort. Pullign the rope throug htio put it out is genuious. The item comes in a drawstring bag, inside a cardboard cylinder. It looks like a gift box.I have one myself and have gifted 2. Its a really great tool; an excellent design well executed.

Pros
  • Great for my bug out bucket!
Cons
  • Unsuitable for use in small, confined spaces

Works easily and efficiently

This product world exactly as advertised. There's a review on here that talks about the fire scraper being crap, and that's definitely not true. I have more products like this one than I can count, and this scraper works wonderfully if you know what you're doing. Take the scraper and turn it perpendicular to the ferro rod, scrape off the black coating, then it will work like a charm. Use the end that had slightly less depth and has a sharp edge on both sides towards one end. Hope this helps

Pros
  • Easy to use. Works every time. Great survival tool!
Cons
  • Possible flint breakage with repeated use

Good ferro rod, but the scraper needs improvement

This is a nicely-packaged little ferro rod. It has a feature I haven't seen in a ferro rod before. It's got rope threaded through the body that you can use as tinder for starting your fires. That's a nice feature. The rod is long enough to give you a good shower of sparks. The handle feels secure in your hand and won't slip. My only issue is the striker. It is not very well made at all. It's nice that it is molded to fit in the package so neatly, but the striker itself doesn't work very well…

Pros
  • I bought the larger one, tested it and got fire... went into my emergency kit duffel bag.
Cons
  • Bulky and difficult to pack for outdoor activities

Hard to start but works

This thing works pretty well if you take several minutes to prepare it. Not for a quick start situation. The rope is a bunch of braided strands braided together and together some more. In order to get the flying sparks to light it you have to almost completely separate all the rope. First you have to split it into 3 and then then three get split into three and you have to splay it all out. Make sure you unravel a good inch and a half of it to get a good light. Then you have to start all over…

Pros
  • Works great, perfect for camper, or emergency bag.
Cons
  • Requires practice to use effectively

SO, This is my very first time attempting to use a ferro rod!. I watched Y-tube video's about them and wanted something to start my Apt prepping just in case the electric/gas went out this winter. Following SensiblePrepper, City Prepping & The Macs, I decided to buy this. I WAS ABLE to light the end of the cord with the rod, sparking it. THIS surprised me!:). I didn't have to remove the black coating from the unit, I just took it out the round package/bag and starting striking it. About the…

Pros
  • It's awesome easy and a real life saver
Cons
  • Steel fire striker may rust over time

You will need to practice.

Don’t expect to get it on your first try if you’ve never used something like this before. However once you get the knack it’s really easy and even fun to use! A camping and survival must have!

Pros
  • Good
Cons
  • Striker may become blunt over time

Revainrating 4 out of 5

New rope? easy to strike hard to light

Easy to use the striker and create sparks but the hemp rope is impossible to light unless you use a lighter which defeats the purpose. I have seen every youtube how-to and frayed the rope so much its almost dust and still it doesn't light no matter how even or hard i strike. Definitely a let down and I will be carrying a backup source as this is not the tool i thought it would be.

Pros
  • Great to have
Cons
  • Tendency to create a large flame that can quickly get out of control

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works every time! on my review.

Really easy to use, lights quickly, and stays burning as long as you want it to. You can use the length of the rope to get the flame down inside the kindling. Great product.

Pros
  • Like it
Cons
  • Not suitable for children or untrained individuals

Absolutely Brilliant

I FULLY expected to have to struggle with this - couldn't imagine it was going to be as easy as the video suggested. I took a minute to fray the end of the rope, started scraping the black paint off, and immediately got sparks. With almost no effort, I was able to get the rope to ignite in a steady burn. I didn't try lighting a fire with the starter, but don't anticipate any problems. This thing is magic!

Pros
  • A little hard to use
Cons
  • Possible injury from flying sparks

Most Excellent Product

I read the reviews. I do not understand the one star reviews where they say they can not start a fire. I watched the videos first so I can understand the techniques used. I got it to light up very quickly. Now I can light it almost every time on the first strike. I love this product and would buy again.

Pros
  • Works great, No issues. It lit the very first strike. Added to my bug out bag.
Cons
  • Can be challenging to use with one hand

It works seamlessly

Followed directions and it worked perfectly the first-time, I'm very satisfied to add this to my camping kit. May not work on certain types of wood or other organic materials!

Pros
  • ‎P4XFS5004
Cons
  • May not work on certain types of wood or other organic materials

4* because it takes lots of practice to use these

These ferro rods are huge! Buy the smaller ones if you don't want to work for your fire.lol. The large ones are what I bought and don't bother me because my hands are big enough to use them. Long time practice allows me to light the wick about 1 in 4 tries so far. Windy conditions about 3 or 4 in 20 tries and the wick doesn't stay lit unless it's well protected. I tried it in the rain and was completely unsuccessful and really didn't expect it to work. So that's all I've got right now. I hope…

Pros
  • Best flint striker I've used. Big shower of sparks.. fun to play with too!
Cons
  • May not be suitable for those with respiratory issues

Great fire starter for my opinion

Took my 11 year old camping and taught her to start a fire using this tool. She was able to do so fairly easily. Great device for backpacking!

Pros
  • Great use, ease of use
Cons
  • Limited amount of tinder included

Revainrating 5 out of 5

High quality for my opinion

The Ferro rod is 6" x .5". It throws sparks about 4 or 5 feet easily with very little effort. Also, I like the aluminum handle/snuffer, makes it much easier to hold the Ferro rod. The scraper is also a great design, it too has some length, and the arc digs into the Ferro rod easily. And, it showed up at my house a week earlier than revain's original delivery date. Win!

Pros
  • Huge sparks
Cons
  • Can only start fires with certain types of tinder

Great Product for my opinion

Not usually a review leaving type but this product was great my wife has never used a fire starter in her life and she got it going on the 2nd strike will be buying one for myself

Pros
  • ULTIMATE FIRE-STARTER TOOL – No need to buy a separate ferrocerium rod, striker, tinder wick, and bellow because this fire kit includes everything you need to create a safe, controlled fire.
Cons
  • Limited effectiveness in extreme weather conditions

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Work great and make great gifts.

Bought one for my husband for his birthday, he loved it so much we bought several more for presents. Works as advertised and is great for outdoor fans.

Pros
  • Would have gotten 5 stars, but rope provided is too thin hor the holder. Keeps falling out...
Cons
  • Requires maintenance to keep striker sharp

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Smaller then I thought

It's small for my hands. But I guess when backpacking you don't want to much bulk.Other then that along as you fray the cord enough it will start.

Pros
  • Works great
Cons
  • Does not include a protective case

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Nice if primary fire device, but too heavy as backup

It is a nice ferro rod setup, where you have a ferro rod and wick together to act as a match/firestarter.PROs: Being all contained together it is difficult to lose any part of it. Its anodized orange so should be easy to locate if dropped. Ferro rod is 6x1/2 inch giving plenty of strikes. The wick acts as the leash to the striker making it easy to use until you've used up the wick which is 36" to start.CONs: heavy-the unit is fairly heavy compared to a separate ferro rod and fire wand pair. I…

Pros
  • Works great. Could be a life saver.
Cons
  • Possible injury from striking fingers or hands

More of a convenience tool

I bought 2 of these. 1 for me and another for a friend. In an emergency they will definitely do as described.however I used one on a camping trip to test it and used it to light any and everything. Super convenient!

Pros
  • With the patented firestarter Prepared4X, you can start a fire easily and quickly, making it perfect for survival situations or outdoor activities where you need a reliable way to start a fire
Cons
  • Tendency to produce a significant amount of smoke

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Impressive, but— on my review.

I like this idea. It’s unique, impressive, fairly lightweight, and has the potential to being awesome. The problem, you ask? The striker sux. If you have a good carbon steel knife, it throws sparks. If you have a good striker, it does the same. So I’m throwing away the striker and carrying on. I think maybe I could have just bout the add on rope and been just as good.

Pros
  • If you’re going to buy the magnesium fire starter this is by far the best one.
Cons
  • Unsuitable for use with wet or damp materials
