I've been using them for years and just bought another shop vacuum for another home and another for him. My old one is probably 3-4 years old and still fine. Usually when I'm emptying a shop vacuum I just knock the dust out of the thing by shaking it or blowing it with compressed air, it's pretty messy but it works. The main thing is that the vacuum cleaner filters stay clean and no longer have to be replaced. Only very fine dust gets into the vacuum filter, which can usually be easily blown out with compressed air. If you're vacuuming sticky or oily items you may need to machine wash this pre-filter, which I did, but that's not usually necessary, you can just shake off the dirt/dust and continue using it. I haven't changed the filter since I bought it and I've used my shop vacuum quite a bit. There is also extra material when you put it on the vacuum filter, I think due to the difference in the size of the filter, to keep it from hanging out, I just fold over the excess material and hold it with a large elastic band.
