So it was an extravagant purchase, period. What do you buy when you come home late at night after a day of thankless work? this is exactly what happened in my case. In my defence, I did some research. I wasn't aware of Peugeot's brilliant history with pepper mills. I read reviews and looked at maybe 2 dozen different models. With every model, I kept referring to Peugeot. It had something that drew me in, but it was expensive. Buying is not for the faint of heart. In the end I took the plunge. Now after a good month using this gadget I can say that it was a very successful purchase. First things first. PEPPER. The smell of freshly ground pepper makes it easy to explain why thousands of European seafarers ventured across the Horn of Africa. Pepper is a spice that is rarely appreciated until it is freshly ground. The Peugeot Elis does that very well. After installation, grain size is rarely an issue. Each of the settings works very well, from fine to final. One thing I really like is the LED light that illuminates the food. This is not a dim light, rather the opposite. Get ready to impress your guests with a candlelit dinner. Second, the touch switch is perfect; no buttons. Touching the top of the grinder activates the grinding process. It is so easy. SALT: Did you know that salt was a currency in Roman times? Some of the Empire's wealthiest cities produced modest salt. I discovered this fun fact recently during a trip to Guerand, the Mecca of Salt, where I was introduced to "grey" salt. It was those cute gray grains of salt that broke the old mill. Unlike other manufacturers, Peugeot sells salt at a different mill. If you look inside the mill you can see a small but clear difference between the two mills. Gray salt is different from kosher or regular gourmet salt. Usually they are ground to the same size, while gray salt is uneven. Gray salt is completely unrefined, in one bag you can see both small and very large grains. The second difference is that gray salt is not very dry. Open the bag. Take a good smell and you will notice the remains of the sea. This seems to be what puts most mills off. An ordinary salt mill left unattended quickly clogs. As a Frenchman, Peugeot obviously knows all too well how to deal with these complexities. After 2 refills I don't see any salt sticking to the grinder, everything looks clean and tidy. Hence, the grinders are well designed and finished with excellent stainless steel finishes. Hard plastic is attractive. The grinder motor easily grinds salt and pepper without hesitation, without the howling noise you hear from smaller grinders. Industrially, I find mills very elegant. They will look good in both classic and modern settings. There are six of us in our family. So both mills get a decent job. So far both have worked flawlessly. I suspect they will be the focus of our table for many years to come.
