After installing the batteries, I tested them on our Chihuahua mix. I lit her and although she didn't like it she started barking again. I held the button longer and used sounds, she really hated it and stopped almost immediately. With our lab mix, the light works for her and I don't have to make a sound. However, sometimes our Chihuahua needs both, but most of the time only one will work. It uses almost no battery and I still have the original batteries when I first installed it. I don't use it every day, all day, just when the kids are playing outside or when we're walking the chihuahuas. While the occasional bark is normal, it's a high-pitched squeak at every little thing that gets worse. Using this bell fighting trainer helped a lot.
