I thought it would run on battery power, but it needs to be plugged into the car cigarette lighter to see the time clearly. Unfortunately, my car still charges when it's off, and if I forget to turn it off I have to start quickly. (I learned that the hard way. in the snow). It saves time when not online so I think that's a plus but I was definitely a bit disappointed.
