Great lights, try no more than 6 segments

Love these lights! I was looking for something to spice up my office and they are easy to install and unobtrusive. I installed them on top of my doors, face up, so they give off indirect light. They are very bright and are perfect for lighting under the closet. The picture doesn't do them justice. I think this is because they are very bright so the rest of the image looks a bit shadowy (it's not!). Included in the kit are multiple cables that allow segments to be connected together or simply nested within one another. The advantage of cables is that you can use them to drive around corners without any problems. All in all a well thought out lighting application. However, there are some disadvantages: 1. Since each segment is separated by a connector, there is a small gap, which you can see on the lights in the picture below (they are directly connected to each other). The only way to avoid this is to place the lights away from the wall. Unfortunately, that's not possible in my case, so I've learned to live with it. In a situation under a closet or under a bed, it probably won't be noticeable.2. The light is not dimmable.3. The light segments themselves are not sold separately4. With the supplied transformer you are limited to 6 light segments. Just a note on the last point - each segment is 3.2 watts, so 19.2 total for 6 of them. In picture 2 you can see that the back of the transformer is rated for exactly 19.2 watts. As long as the segments are not sold separately, you can buy another kit and another string, BUT IF YOU CONNECT MORE THAN 6 SEGMENTS TO THIS TRANSFORMER IT WILL BE FIRE HAZARD. You will find that the transformer gets very, very hot. It can get hot enough to melt the plastic casing and cause a fire. The solution to running more segments is to get a bigger 24v transformer and do some wiring - the connections are not standard so some DIY needs to be done here. I bought two kits for my application and then bought a 50w dimmable transformer so I could dim the lights if I wanted to. Overall, this is a unique and flexible product that is much easier to use than the competition due to its compact yet expandable nature. I have a few suggestions for improvement: 1. Increase the power of the transformer to 24W in the standard 6 segment kit to smooth out current fluctuations and allow for cooler operation.2. Provide more standard connections to the transformer (actually it doesn't matter as most LED transformers accept bare wire connection and if you replace them you just need to cut the wire)3. Sell light segments separately4. Provide multiple cable and connector lengths from 1" to 3" instead of a 6" set for more flexibility (and because the connectors are non-standard). If you want to find a bigger power transformer, search for "24V LED DRIVER TRANSFORMER". Make sure it's 24V and the power (W) is high enough. Multiply the number of segments by 3.2 and that number should be around 80% The power of the transformer For example, 10 segments need 32W, but you should look for a transformer of 40W or more to provide a little damping and keep the transformer cooler.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
