Will not work with computer cable adapters

I purchased this item and used it to connect two different iPhones to two different TVs. and couldn't get the phone/TV combo to work. Then I broke down and bought the same product from Apple. Of course, the apple product was 3 times more expensive. but works fine on both iPhones/TVs.
