About five years ago I gave our two oldest grandchildren an old version of this microscope. Having recently spoken to their father, I found that they still use it to look at things. My other son's eldest son turned 7 a few days ago. I thought he might like one of the new QX-5 models. When I searched the internet for this model, I found that it is available at a very good price from a company that services the microscope. When I called them they said they were out of stock but gave me the name of a dealer who sold them for the same price. There were no problems installing the software when using the Vista computer system. The box doesn't say it works with Vista but the support company said they should have the program but if not they can send it to me. My son installed the software and helped my grandson use it first. After a while he was able to use it without much guidance, although I would recommend an adult read the instructions and perform some operations on the child. The microscope can be removed from the stand and brought to the object for examination. Damage may result if a child is not careful or accidentally drops the scope. It's nice that the QX-5 can capture objects being viewed and capture moving specimens on video.
