They come new, full of sand and grit! Only use the boat after washing it off for 15 minutes. It takes some effort to remove all the sand from these mats. I bought a white one to match the boat, it stayed clean for 5 minutes. Use only a hose, mild spray and scrub to clean. Looks dirty after first use after cleaning. As far as shock or impact reduction goes, that helps a bit. Would you like something better, maybe 2 on top of each other?
