Review on πŸ’‘ Seasonic FOCUS Plus 850 Platinum SSR-850PX: Reliable Full Modular Power Supply with Compact Size and Efficient Cooling by Anthony Hicks

Extremely disappointing Ready to use

I'm about to return my second new Seasonic in a month. The first was the Focus Gold 550w. The second version of the 750w. Both have a very big problem out of the box. Everything is going well, the rails readings look good under load and the fan doesn't really kick in. The only problem is the TERRIBLE squeaking and popping that comes from them as soon as you turn on the PC they're connected to. It's so loud I can easily hear it from another room! And I'm not talking about a little coil whine here. I'm not even sure if it's even a coil whistle. It is an incredibly loud, absolutely constant and even, shrill ringing. In fact, the 750W is so loud that the ringing lingers in my ears for up to a minute after I turn it off. Not only that, but other mainboard components are starting to squeak just as loudly. VRM and dedicated GPU power parts reduce noise. I can hear it by putting a straw in my ear and pointing the other end at the GPU, the heatsink over the VRMs, and even louder at the back of the motherboard, right where those VRMs are. The power supply is even louder when it is removed from the housing and the machine. This also applies to my USB audio interfaces. The hiss from the speakers is so loud that even the loudest, heavily compressed music cannot drown it out. Scarlett 2i2, JBL LSR 305, connected with a balanced, high quality cable. Only with these power supplies. In fact, the noise sounds exactly like the audible noise coming from the power supply and other components. Crazy! How does this happen? Frankly, this level of interference is alarming. The noise that this actually creates often kills the detail very quickly. I'm surprised it worked at all considering how little ripple it takes to ruin everything. I'm glad it still works. I tested 3 of my motherboards, 2 of my machines and one of someone else's. Tried different outlets, different rooms, even different buildings. Something is terribly wrong here. Other power supplies with the same components do not have this problem. I had never owned Seasonic but I always thought her to be one of the best. But after all this back and forth just trying to get one that won't interfere with my car and all that goes with it, I will never buy one again. A big disappointment from a company that should produce quality products. I don't expect a $100 PSU to behave this way when even a $30 PSU fails. Again, I'm surprised my computer works at all. I mean, the procedure made the other components scream in pain! It's not just a little coil squeak - it's something else entirely. I don't want to believe I ended up with two Seasonics bums. ...but even the one who does looks pretty bad to them. It would take a long time to describe the extensive rounds of troubleshooting and troubleshooting strategies I've undertaken, but I can promise you I've done my best to try and uncover another cause. There isn't a combination of things that makes it go away. I really tried. It just doesn't exist. sorry Seasonic. I want you to enjoy your products, but I'm not feeling too confident right now. I've spent way too much time wishing everything was fine because everyone says it's fine when in reality it's not. It really makes me question the quality control of these things. Buyer Warning. Test your PSU outside of the car before removing the old one completely.
